Flexible Concrete Designs

High-stability concrete is used to offer geosynthetic solutions that have a wide range of applications in shoreline stabilization, riverbank restoration, habitat creation, and bridge scour protection. The ArmorFlex mats are a perfect example of a product that Nilex offers which is able to provide protection to environments that suffer from erosion by water.

The product is made up of Articulating Concrete Blocks (ACBs). Each block of stability concrete can be fabricated to have an open-cell design for revegetation or a closed block design for heavy loading. They are arranged with geometrical precision within mats that can be easily installed on-site.

These structures can come in handy in areas that are running out of natural rocks and can save significant costs for projects due to the ease of installation. When combined with geotextile, ArmorFlex can be used to grow vegetation, further protecting shorelines from erosion. The flexibility in the design allows you to use these structures on a wide range of surfaces including slopes and rough terrain.

They are also adaptable to various temperatures and are frost-resistant. When it comes to safety, their design allows them to eliminate the risk of pinch points that usually develop between rocks.

Types Of Natural Turf Products Nilex Offers

Natural turfs reduce the volume and length of water accumulation on a field. This leads to a healthier turf with higher resistance to damage and low maintenance cost in parks, sports fields and residential areas. This is because the turf gains a favorable growing condition as the roots do not have a prolonged saturation period.

Multi-Flow and NuDrain are the types of natural turf products Nilex offers. Multi-Flow is an extensive soil water management system, whereas, NuDrain Strip drains are effective in removing standing water on several landscapes without disrupting the surrounding areas by designing narrow trench drain concretes and backfilling with soil. These products are economical and eco-friendly aggregate drainage systems that are apt for applications such as roads, fields and golf courses.

Multi-Flow drainage systems are highly efficient as it minimizes the amount of spoil material excavated and transported from the site, and the amount of drainage aggregate processed, transported and placed on site. NuDrain is a high flow dimpled system designed to collect water and efficiently channel it away. Its 3D core makes it highly compressive with a high flow drainage rate channel and the fused filter fabric prevents soil intrusion into the drainage channel.

Nilex’s precast concrete retaining walls helped improve Huron Road, Ontario

In the year 2012, a portion of the Huron Road in Kitchener, Ontario was improved with the help of Nilex’s precast concrete retaining walls (MESA).  The primary challenge was to reinforce the wetland in the area where the road was to be improved and Nilex’s MESA retaining wall was the perfect solution.

Load was equally distributed

The precast concrete blocks in Nilex’s MESA retaining walls were combined with the TensarTriAx Geogrid TX160 to reinforce the wetland. This unique combination increased the capacity of the terrain to bear load as the interlocked system helped distribute load equally across the terrain.

Low absorption rate of water and moisture

Wetlands are not ideal for concrete blocks as they absorb the water in the terrain and disintegrate over time. However, the precast concrete blocks for retaining walls used in MESA have a low absorption rate making them ideal for wetlands.

Geogrids resistant to corrosion

Wetlands are ideal for corrosion because of the amount of moisture/water found on the terrain. In addition to concrete blocks with low absorption rates, Nilex’s precast block retaining walls (MESA) consist of HDPE geogrids that are resistant to erosion.

Reducing Environmental Impact of A Project Using Smart Solutions

As the environment is a topic of immense interest in Canada, companies are always looking to ensure they implement strategies and solutions that lead to responsible behavior. According to the market and consumer data company Statista, Canada’s mining industry is one of the largest in the world. This brings to mind not only the variety of metals and minerals extracted for domestic consumption as well as exports, but also its impact on air, land and water. This has led to the enforcement of usage of geomembranes in waste management, oil & gas and mining and other industrial applications. Containment solutions make use of geomembrane to prevent the leaching of materials into the surrounding soil and groundwater thus bringing down the impact on our environment.

Advantage Nilex

With over 40 years of industry knowledge and expertise, Nilex has developed synthetic lining products that offer efficient containment solutions to structures such as ponds, landfills, tanks, lagoons and secondary containment facilities. We can offer our expertise to contain a variety of liquids, solids and waste from contaminating our environment.  For preventing loss of material from erosion by wind or water, we offer geomembrane covers which can also help in controlling odor effectively. With Nilex, whatever be the challenge, you can be sure that your company will remain above compliance requirements with our smart, environmentally conscious containment solutions.

The benefits of Nilex's vegetated wall system

Nilex's vegetated wall systems are one of the most effective and innovative MSE solutions available in the market. A few of the numerous benefits of these walls are listed below.

Nilex's vegetated walls are reliable

The reliability of the vegetated walls by Nilex is attributed to the components incorporated into them. These include geogrids, both biaxial and uniaxial, mats that reinforce the terrain and wire-wielded forms, wherever applicable.

Nilex's vegetated walls help retain native vegetation

Nilex's vegetated retaining walls allow native vegetation to be planted at the wall facing in an indistinguishable manner mirroring the originality of the natural terrain in a near-exact fashion.

Nilex's vegetated walls help prevent erosion

The erosion of topsoil strips a terrain bare of nutrients and leaves it unfit for the growth of plants. Nilex's vegetated wall systems allow for the enjoyment of the benefits of a slope without compromising the quality of the terrain. The roots of the vegetation hold on to the topsoil and keep them from eroding down a slope.

Nilex’s vegetated walls provide a cheaper & greener solution

Vegetated MSE systems are the cheapest, most aesthetically-pleasing and most eco-friendly to reinforcing a slope, without any compromise on the structural integrity expected off of concrete-facing MSE systems.

Three Water Management Solutions by Nilex

Effective water management solutions can be applied to areas that need superior drainage such as golf courses and sports fields, as well as to green roofs, stormwater facilities and other applications. Here are some of the solutions offered by Nilex:

Stormwater management- To prevent downstream flooding, damage to infrastructure and habitat and stream bank erosion, Nilex uses low impact development techniques which allow the water to seep into the ground and replenish natural reserves.

Waterproofing systems- As a part of their water management solutions, Nilex uses composite drainage cores of plastic with geotextile fabrics to retain grout, concrete, soil and sand. Using foundation drains, podium planters and green roofs, the company addresses the issues of water damage to the foundation, terrace, podium and roof of buildings.

Landscape and recreational drainage- Nilex also offers advanced drainage solutions which help to promote turf health, improve turf growth and lower costs of maintenance at residential complexes, parks and sports fields. Using natural turf prevents the accumulation of excess standing water which can lead to root damage. Nilex’sNuDrain Strip and Multi-Flow have tremendously helped in this regard.

Apart from the above, there are other water management solutions that Nilex offers based on the client’s needs.

Containment Solutions Offered by Nilex

Structures built to contain things need to be adequately lined so that they continue to hold their contents without harming the surrounding ecosystem. Some examples of containment structures include landfills, ponds, tanks, etc. Nilex offers both primary and secondary containment solutions.

Primary containment solutions by Nilex

The intent of primary containment solutions is to prevent the seepage of the contents of a containment structure or unit into the ground below. This is attained by lining these containment units with geomembranes. Low density polyethylene membranes are used as they are flexible and can be easily stretched across the inner lining of the containment units. Geomembranes reinforced with XR-5 are specifically used for containment units that store chemicals as these membranes are resistant to chemicals.

Secondary containment solutions by Nilex

Secondary containment solutions are preferred for containment units that store industrial liquids. Industrial leaks are hazardous to human life and the environment and it is therefore extremely important that spills are contained. In addition to being resistant to chemicals, the geomembranes used to line the secondary containment units are also resistant to high temperatures. Nilex provides containment rings that check the spread of spills, if they occur.

Significance of Primary Containment Installation Services

Primary containment applications are used for preventing the leaching of materials into the surrounding soil and groundwater. These containment solutions are designed to protect people and the immediate laboratory environment from exposure to infectious agents.

These containers are usually designed along with secondary containment systems to contain or control a release from the primary containment. A tank, vessel, pipe, transport vessel or equipment is often used as the primary container or used for the transferring material. For instance, primary containment tank lining systems are installed inside steel, concrete and wood containment structures to ensure containment and protection of the tank and the environment. Reducing Loss of Primary Containment (LOPC’s) or commonly referred to as “leaks” in a refinery is essential to improve reliability and avoid losses. It is the reason why secondary containment is implemented to assure maximum protection of the material, people and the assets of an organisation.

Containment solution providers offer primary and secondary containment Installation Services for the containment of a variety of liquids, solids and waste materials. They also provide specialty materialsfor unique chemical and/or thermal conditions. They also provide liner Installation Services, design assistance, fabrication and construction services for containment applications.

The Differences Between Nonwoven Geotextiles and Woven Geotextiles

Geotextiles are a permeable synthetic textile material, made from either polypropylene or polyester. Geotextiles are used for several different applications in a range of civil and environmental engineering structures that are mainly associated with soil, there are 5 key functions that geotextiles perform:

1.) Separation

2.) Reinforcement

3.) Filtration

4.) Protection

5.) Drainage

What is a Nonwoven Geotextile?

Nonwoven Geotextiles are produced by entangling fibres, long or short together, either through needle
punching or other methods.  Some additional thermal treatment is then applied to further improve the strength of the geotextile. Due to this manufacturing process and their permeable properties, non-woven geotextiles are generally best used in applications of drainage, separation, filtration and protection. Nonwoven fabrics are typically classified by their weight per square yard, for example a square yard of 6 oz. geotextile, weighs 6 ounces. They feel and look like felt.

What is a Woven Geotextile?

Woven Geotextiles are manufactured by blending and weaving fibres together on a loom, forming one
uniform length. The result is a product that is not only strong, which makes them a great fit for applications like road construction and parking lots, but also remarkably well equipped to handle ground stabilisation problems.  They are relatively impermeable (water does not flow through very well) and do not offer the best separation against fines.
